Limestone - matt, polished and distressed -
Limestone tiles are a truly natural flooring option and are formed as a sedimentary rock composed mainly of Calcite (CaCo3) that constitutes about 10% of the the sedimentary rock exposed on the Earths surface.It is formed by crystalisation of water or by the accumulation of shell and shell fragments Limestone tiles are usually light coloured however with impurities such as iron oxides and organic materials they can take on a variety of colours and surface markings. Limestone has been used as a building material for many generations and is gaining popularity as a sophisticated flooring material offering the timeless qualities only possible with natural materials. Limestone tiles as with all natural materials will vary in shade and surface figuration. It's important to see physical samples before considering a stone and even better to see an actual floor. All Limestone tiles require sealing and consideration should be given to where it is to be used as this can influence the final decision.
Travertine - a young marble.
Travertine marble tiles are a very dense form of Calcium Carbonate and although a Limestone, Travertine is more usually considered as a Marble. Colours vary from pale to dark cream with attractive surface varigation. Due to it's formation voids occur in the surface,these are either filled at the Quarry or during fixing. Used since Roman times as a building material Travertine with its unique qualities as a flooring material lend itself to many domestic and commercial applications. Harder than Limestone tiles and thus usually available in 12mm thickness,an important consideration when floor levels are an issue. Travertine tiles are a hardwearing, practical yet timless floor covering that has to be seen to be appreciated. There are several size permutations available. The surface appearance of the tile depends on the cutting technique at the quarry.Tiles are either cut with the natural grain of the stone or contra cut against the natural grain.
Filled or Unfilled? One of the characteristics of this material is the voids on the surface. These can vary from literally pinholes to quite large irregular holes. Many prefer these voids to be filled during installation when the tiles are grouted however some tiles are available filled at the factory with Resin. These voids are the characteristic feature of this material and add character and variety to the tiles.
Granite - Granite, marble and slate are products whose environmental benefits depends on your perspective. While it is true that these materials are extracted from the earth, natural stones provide a long lasting alternative to most traditional building materials. With very little maintenance, once installed, these materials will be enjoyed for years and years.
Slate -
Slates are generally composed of fine grained materials usually clay based, that has been subject to intense natural compression. Their one common chacacteristic is that they will split into thin tiles and it this rugged natural cleft surface that is most often associated with slate.
A unique composition of volcanic dust and ash. In addition there are many attractive slates from overseas providing a broad palette of texture size and colour to work with. The infinite colours and textures of stone inspire creative design. A difference in surface texture lends unity, while still allowing variety that cannot be achieved in many other materials. Ultimately the use of stone provides a wonderful visual stimulant in a building.
